SIF (Specialised Investment Funds)

What Is a Specialised Investment Fund?

A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is a new investment category introduced by SEBI that allows mutual fund houses to offer more flexible investment strategies to investors with a higher risk appetite and a larger investment size.

SIFs can use approaches that traditional mutual funds generally cannot — such as long-short equity, sector rotation or active asset allocation — including limited short exposure through derivatives within limits prescribed by SEBI. They are offered by SEBI-registered AMCs and follow mutual fund–style governance, valuation and disclosure norms.

The minimum investment is ₹10 lakh per investor across the SIF strategies of an AMC, placing SIFs between mutual funds and Portfolio Management Services (₹50 lakh) in terms of entry size.

Common SIF Strategy Types

Equity Long-Short

Primarily equity portfolios with limited short positions to manage risk.

Sector Rotation

Dynamic allocation across sectors based on market cycles.

Debt Long-Short

Fixed-income strategies that can take limited short exposure.

Active Asset Allocator

Flexible allocation across equity, debt and other assets.

Hybrid Long-Short

Combination of equity and debt with long-short flexibility.
