What Is NPS?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, market-linked retirement savings scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). Contributions are invested by professional pension fund managers in a mix of equity, corporate bonds, government securities and alternative assets.
NPS offers two account types: Tier I, the core retirement account with tax benefits and withdrawal restrictions, and Tier II, a voluntary, flexible savings account. You can choose your own asset allocation (Active Choice) or let it adjust automatically with age (Auto Choice).
At retirement, a portion of the corpus can be withdrawn as a lump sum, and the balance is used to purchase an annuity that provides a regular pension, as per prevailing PFRDA rules.
